Titans promote two, hire one in personnel department

The Titans have made a few changes to their personnel department for the 2018 season.

The team announced on Friday that they have promoted Ryan Cowden to vice president of player personnel. Cowden had been the director of player personnel for the last two seasons.

Jets rookie tight end Chris Herndon was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after a car accident early Saturday, the New Jersey State Police confirmed.

Herndon was taken away in handcuffs from the scene of the accident, which occurred on Route 80 West in Rockaway Township, N.J.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Lawrence Peele said that Herndon was driving a Nissan Armada and hit and totaled a Toyota FJ-40 Land Cruiser owned by Albert Elliott, 76, of Manalapan, N.J. at 4:45 a.m. Saturday. Elliott was towing another vehicle, which was also destroyed along with the trailer.

Speaks spent three years at Ole Miss and left the school with 121 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and nine sacks. He’ll be in the mix for playing time off the edge after the Chiefs parted ways with Tamba Hali this offseason.

The second-year player tweeted on June 1 that his Instagram account had been stolen from him, too.

Since my Instagram got hacked guess I gotta learn how to use Twitter now, he ironically wrote on the platform Friday.

Moss, while seemingly not at fault, is no stranger to controversy. He was charged with indecent exposure while at Nebraska in 2012, for which he was banned from the campus in 2014 before transferring to Youngstown State.

Moss logged 14 total tackles in limited action for the Giants in his rookie year.

Terrell Owens is a first-ballot Hall of Famer at talking about a return to the NFL.

Dad never allowed his son to feel an ounce of self-pity.

Now, that O’Leary-like doubt could creep back into his world. Griffin reminds everyone that his edge has been meticulously building from age four to 22. That his father, Terry, never treated him like he had one hand. No, it’d get ridiculous with Dad starting at 150 pushups per night and adding 25 reps each week.

Be it sets of 20, 10 or five, both twins had no choice but to hit whatever magic number Dad picked. And if they dozed off for some reason, Dad woke them up.

Shaquill scowls, repeats that he’s king, and in his defense, how in the hell could Griffin ever win a game of one-on-one? Seriously. All defenders are taught to force players to dribble with their weak hand. For most, their left hand. Politely remind Griffin that he, uh, doesn’t have a left hand, and he doesn’t back down. He insists he still finds ways to create space.

The matchup pits the past two NFC champions and is a rematch of last season’s tight divisional playoff round tilt, which the Eagles won 15-10

In the postseason victory, quarterback Nick Foles threw for 246 yards on 23 of 30 passing, leading one touchdown score and three field-goal drives, as the Eagles’ defense stymied Matt Ryan and the Falcons’ offense in Philly.

The kickoff rematch could have a different signal-caller under center for the Eagles. 2017 MVP candidate Carson Wentz hopes to be ready for Week 1 after suffering an ACL and LCL tear in mid-December that sidelined him for Philadelphia’s Super Bowl run. Wentz has begun the running portion of his rehab and could sit out the preseason if he’s not ready to return. Might Week 1 be the first time we see Wentz back under center for the Eagles versus Dan Quinn’s fast Falcons defense?

Report: Brady focusing less on football this offseason than in past

Until Tom Brady either shows up to a team-organized workout or publicly commits to playing in 2018, speculation will continue swirling that he is contemplating his football future. The latest report won’t help.

An undrafted free agent out of Southern Utah, Pringle played running back and receiver in college — rushing for 1,130 yards and 14 touchdowns on 228 carries and catching 26 passes for 329 yards in 33 games — before converting to cornerback as a rookie last season.

Pringle had been an all-league player on both offense and defense in high school.

After flashing some serious speed at his pro day, running a 4.42 40-yard dash, Pringle spent portions of last season on Jacksonville and Green Bay’s practice squads.

Pringle is the third player from Southern Utah to spend time on the Lions’ roster in recent years, joining safety Miles Killebrew and cornerback Josh Thornton.

The veteran pass-catcher openly shared his desire to play in the NFC East — facing Dallas twice a year — but none of those teams have come forward to chase him.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport listed the Ravens as a distinct possibility, a move that would pair Bryant with free-agent addition Michael Crabtree.

The Saints also are a candidate, as is Buffalo, but neither has emerged as a favorite to land the former Cowboys star. The timing isn’t ideal for Bryant — with teams zooming toward the draft — but there’s no question he’ll ultimately find work.

General manager Howie Roseman doesn’t want to deal his backup quarterback because he has the luxury of the best security blanket imaginable. That stance isn’t going to change until or unless Wentz returns to full health in his recovery from surgery to repair his ACL as well as his LCL.

On that note, Wentz assured reporters Monday that he doesn’t need to play in the preseason to be ready for the regular-season opener.

UTSA’s Marcus Davenport and Boston College’s Harold Landry would top the wish list.

Comparing Davenport to Ansah wouldn’t be too wide of the mark. Entering the league, both offered prototypical builds, elite athleticism, but raw talent. It’s easy to forget, Ansah only had 4.5 sacks during his college career. Davenport racked up 21, including 15 the past two seasons, but against a lower level of competition. His technique will need refinement to port that success to the next level.

Report: Peyton Manning could get up to $10 million per year from FOX or ESPN

Twenty years ago, as a rookie quarterback in the NFL, Peyton Manning signed a contract that paid him $8 million per year. Soon, he could be making 25 percent more than that as a rookie broadcaster.

Michael McCarthy of SportingNews.com reports that ESPN and FOX are prepared to pay Manning up to $10 million per year to work as the primary analyst on Monday Night Football or Thursday Night Football.

The guy looked like a top-15 NFL quarterback. And he is. Except he isn’t.

The footage was of Colin Kaepernick throwing on a small field in Houston. My belief—and it’s an educated one—is that the video release was tactical. Kaepernick, who is embroiled in a collusion case against the NFL, was reminding everyone of two things:

In the wake of the Jets’ blockbuster decision to trade three second-round picks to the Colts so they could move up from No. 6 to No. 3 in this year’s draft, we’d like to offer this cautionary tale.

In 1980, the Jets traded two first-rounders to move into the second overall slot, where they drafted Texas receiver and Olympic sprinter Johnny Lam Jones.

As Cousins and his next employer prepare to negotiate and sign a multi-year contract, the 44-percent rule becomes a factor in the team’s planning for the year after his contract expires. The Drew Brees grievance against the NFL and the Saints from 2012 established that franchise tags stack from one team to the next. Thus, if another team ever tries to apply the franchise tag to Cousins, he’ll be entitled to a 44-percent increase over his cap number from the final year of the deal.

For that reason, his next team could try to structure the contract to have a reasonable cap number in the last year of the contract, cognizant of the looming 44-percent jump. Barring that wrinkle, chances are that Cousins will, for the rest of his career, not have to worry about being franchise-tagged, because no one will be able to justify giving him a 44-percent bump over whatever he’s due to make in the final year of whichever contract he’s completing.

Tyler Devera could be in line for an offer following a standout performance in front of the Rutgers staff.

Former Nets coach taking Alabama to new heights

It sounds impossible because it seems impossible: Alabama basketball once was better than Alabama football.

In the early years of the 21st Century, while Mike Shula was struggling to put together winning seasons with one of the most storied programs in the nation, Mark Gottfried was treating the largely indifferent Tuscaloosa campus to five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including an unlikely run to the Elite Eight as a No. 8 seed in 2004.

The 27-year-old Long steps into the middle of a line that had some struggles last season. The Jets wanted to upgrade from center Wesley Johnson and view Long as that upgrade. They had interest in some of the top centers on the market, like Weston Richburg and Ryan Jensen, but Richburg went to the 49ers and Jensen might be too expensive for them.

The Jets tendered restricted free agent wide receiver Quincy Enunwa at the second-round level, meaning he will have a salary of $2.9 million this season. Enunwa is recovering from neck surgery that cost him all of last season. He had 58 catches for 857 yards and four touchdowns in 2016. He was a sixth-round pick by the team in 2014. If a team wants to sign Enunwa away from the Jets, they would have to give up a second-round pick, something that is not happening.

General manager Mike Maccagnan attended Oklahoma’s Pro Day on Wednesday where the star was quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Giants were also well represented, with offensive coordinator Mike Shula and four scouts in attendance. Broncos GM John Elway and Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis were also there.

Some contract details emerged from the Jets’ early signings.

Cornerback Trumaine Johnson received a whopping five-year, $72.5 million deal with $34 million in fully guaranteed money and another $11 million in injury guarantees, according to a source.

Linebacker Avery Williamson will sign a three-year, $22.5 million contract, according to his agents.

Running back Isaiah Crowell will sign a three-year, $12 million with $6 million in guarantees, according to a source.

The full details of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s one-year deal are not known, but it is believed the base is around $5 million. Several reports said it could reach a maximum value of $15 million. That is surely only if he hit a lot of incentives.

The Jets lost two of their own free agents Wednesday when LB Demario Davis signed a reported three-year, $24 million deal with the Saints and K Chandler Catanzaro signed a three-year, $9.75 million deal with the Buccaneers, according to reports.

Report: Seahawks to cut Richard Sherman today

It seemed obvious that something was up with Richard Sherman the other day, when he was telling his teammates goodbye.

Now, the inevitable end has come.

As far as the rules devaluing kickoff returners, that’s true. But the Patriots do a better job of that against guys like Patterson than a lot of other teams seem to be able to. I still think Patterson can be a weapon on kickoffs he has five career TDs and a 30.2 avg. especially in games late in the year in Foxborough where teams aren’t going to be able to drive it through the end zone or even control it short. Certainly $3 million is nothing to sneeze at, but a team like the Patriots consistently pays guys similar money to play primarily special teams and that’s an area where Patterson has and can excel. And I think he’ll be a complementary player on offense.

Ran into Fitz in the airport yesterday. He’s a GREAT recruiter! Cousins wrote.

Cousins ending up in Arizona seems like a long shot, as the Cardinals have less salary cap space than other quarterback-needy teams. But Cousins has indicated that his decision will have to do with more than just money, and he’ll be looking for the right fit. Perhaps Fitzgerald can convince him that Arizona is the place to be.

Hekker is almost universally regarded as the best punter in football, and this two-year extension came with four years already remaining on his current deal. It won’t technically hit the books for the Rams until 2021. The Oregon State product is one of just a handful of players signed through the 2022 campaign. King, meanwhile, inherited the biggest three-year contract title after Dustin Colquitt’s contract expired following the most recent season. The Raiders paid King $5.3 million during the 2016 season alone, which was more than Carr and Mack combined.

The Tennessee punter made his first Pro Bowl in 2017 and enters the fourth year of a five-year, $15 million deal this campaign. At 32 years old, Kern should be in line for an extension after the season.

Sibande’s 22 helps Miami (Ohio) top Central Michigan 70-61

Nike Sibande scored a career-high 22 points and made all four of his 3-point shots as Miami (Ohio) defeated Central Michigan 70-61 Tuesday night.

Logan McLane added 13 points and eight rebounds for Miami (11-9, 4-3 Mid-American Conference), Isaiah Lands-Coleman added 12 points on four 3-pointers. Darrian Ringo, ranked seventh nationally in total assists, dished 10, the sixth time this season he’s reached double-digit assists.

They’ll let the numbers do the talking. This is the seventh straight AFC title game the Patriots have been to. They have nothing to prove and the Jaguars are going to learn that fast.

Speaking of stats and numbers though, no one accumulates what you need to know better than our friends over at Opta. To help you prepare for the AFC championship game this weekend, they have gathered all kinds of knowledge for you to sink your teeth into. We’re just putting those on a page for you.

The Patriots have a 10-1 record all time when facing the Jaguars (including playoffs). Their lone loss came in 1999 at Jacksonville in the wild-card round of the playoffs.

It was on me, for this game, Self said. If I had to do it all over again, knowing what I know now, I would’ve done it differently. … It was obviously the wrong thing to do to win this game.

In the final four minutes, the Sooners had reserve Matt Freeman deliberately foul Azubuike and put the 41 percent free throw shooter at the line.

On back-to-back possessions, Azubuike missed on the front end of a one-and-one. The next time Kansas had the ball, Azubuike was fouled again, leading to two more misses from the line.

Freeman finally fouled out with 1:56 remaining. But Azubuike misfired on two more free throws. Two possessions later, Oklahoma freshman Trae Young found Christian James in the corner for a go-ahead 3-pointer, giving the Sooners an 82-80 lead.

Joe Thomas is glad Browns didn’t fire Hue Jackson

Joe Thomas is glad Hue Jackson will be returning to the Browns.

The star offensive tackle said firing Jackson, despite the team’s 1-31 record over the past two seasons, would not have been helpful to the organization.

Jackson also was instrumental in keeping the team together and fighting every game until the end. Thomas said very few coaches could do that.

According to Thomas, the future is only bright for the Browns. After two years of loss after loss, Thomas explained that the Browns now have two of the top 4 draft picks this spring and more than $100 million in cap space.

You throw an experienced quarterback in the mix and there’s nothing that says the Browns can’t make the playoffs next year, he said.

Former Pro Bowl WR Greg Jennings heard those comments. He also heard Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones’ comments on the star wide receiver about how his outbursts can be a distraction. Taking all of that into account, Jennings has some advice for Bryant which comes from his own personal experience.

Take the pay cut, Jennings said on Undisputed Tuesday. I understand as an athlete when you’ve been a star in the league, performer, it’s hard for you to see your abilities diminishing, it’s hard to come to grips with that, but if he is not willing to take a pay cut, he will not make even what the pay cut would be somewhere else.

Jennings went on to describe his final year with the Vikings when Minnesota asked him to take a pay cut for one season from $9 million to $6.5 million. He did not want to give up the money and the Vikings would go on to cut him.

He then signed with the Dolphins for two years, $8 million.

Zabo’s hot hand in OT lifts Kent State over Ball State 88-80

Kevin Zabo scored seven of his 21 points in overtime and Danny Pippen finished with a double-double to power Kent State to an 88-80 victory over Ball State on Tuesday night.

Pippen scored 11 with 16 rebounds for the Golden Flashes (10-10, 4-3 Mid-American Conference), who beat the Cardinals for a 15th straight time. Adonis De La Rosa finished with 15 points and eight rebounds, Jaylin Walker scored 17 with seven boards and Jalen Avery and BJ Duling added 10 points each.

Pagano was put in a bleak position right away with star quarterback Andrew Luck shut down for the year following offseason shoulder surgery. Still, the Colts have more problems than their missing signal-caller and it’s reasonable to believe Ballard would desire a fresh start with a hand-picked coach of his own.

The ninth-ranked Bearcats are riding a 10-game winning streak into Wednesday night’s game against the Temple Owls at BB&T Arena, and are looking to extend the nation’s longest active home winning streak to 37 straight.

Cronin shouldn’t have to work too hard to get his team’s attention this week. The Owls have been a thorn in the Bearcats’ side at times. Temple is the last team to beat the Bearcats at home, winning 77-70 in the league opener on Dec. 29, 2015.

Cincinnati is playing its home games at Northern Kentucky University while on-campus Fifth Third Arena undergoes an $87 million renovation.

Bearcats forward Gary Clark didn’t have his best outing in the first meeting against Temple with 10 points and four rebounds and managed only four shot attempts. But, Clark is coming off a huge week with back-to-back double-doubles, averaging 15.5 points and 14.5 rebounds while shooting 48.3 percent to earn Co-American Athletic Conference player of the week honors.

Reese helps Canisius get sweep of co-MAAC leader Iona, 84-82

Isaiah Reese scored 21 points but more importantly milked five critical seconds off the clock in the closing seconds and Canisius edged Iona 84-82 on Sunday in a showdown of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference co-leaders.

Iona pulled within one on a pair of free throws by Rickey McGill with 8.9 seconds left. After the inbounds, the Gaels forced a jump ball but the possession stayed with the Golden Griffins with 6.7 to go. On the next inbounds, Reese eluded two defenders and got 5.4 seconds off the clock before he was intentionally fouled with 1.3 remaining. He made 1 of 2 and received one last inbounds pass to run out the clock.

Keenum was forced into the lineup in Week 2 after Sam Bradford injured his knee. The 29-year-old held onto the job full time since Week 5 with stellar play-making ability and fearlessness throwing down the field. Foles took over after MVP candidate Carson Wentz tore his ACL in Week 14, doing enough to propel the NFC East winners into the championship game.

Scott was a native of the Friendswood, Texas, in greater Houston. She played at Baylor from 2002 to 2006, the era in which the Lady Bears first emerged as a national power in women’s basketball under coach Kim Mulkey.

Scott averaged 7.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game during Baylor’s 2004-05 championship season and averaged 8.8 and 6.4 the next year as a senior.

Her professional basketball career was cut short, though, by Crohn’s disease. Scott then worked for Chevron as a performance coach on a deep-sea oil rig. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 after a colonoscopy found a malignant blockage. Scott had recovered from that initial cancer discovery.

But Mulkey, speaking to the media on Jan. 12, said that cancer had returned aggressively to Scott, who was back in the hospital in Houston and receiving treatment. Scott told ESPN.com in 2016 that she approached her battle with cancer similarly to how she approached being a basketball player.
