LeBron James and Cleveland have made history.
Cleveland, which beat the Celtics 135-102 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals on Thursday, has set themselves up for a third-straight NBA Finals appearance with the Warriors the first time in NBA history two teams have met in three straight Finals.
Another impressive feat from the game: James scored 35 points, giving him 5,995 points in NBA postseason history, surpassing Michael Jordan for most all-time.
On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank Griff for his leadership and many contributions during his time here, including most recently, his role in the franchises first NBA championship, Gilbert said in his statement. We have no announcement at this time related to new leadership of the Cavaliers basketball operations group, but we are confident our current front office will continue to aggressively explore and pursue opportunities to improve our team in the weeks ahead.
Cavs assistant GM Trent Redden, whose contract runs through June 30, also will not return next season.
Former NBA guard Chauncey Billups, who has been working as an analyst for ESPN, is reported to be a candidate to replace Griffin. Billups interviewed for the Hawks GM position last month. The Hawks hired former Warriors assistant GM Travis Schlenk instead.
Billups has relationship with Dan Gilbert and Ty Lue, and sources say will be considered as President of Basketball Ops who’d make GM hire.
